5 Newborn Toys for Sensory Development

Written by:

The best newborn toys provide sensory interaction, soothing gentle sounds, and encourage primary motor development. Since a newborn baby is still developing their vision, toys that incorporate high-contrast patterns are often recommended for this early age.

Baby toys for tummy time are always a go-to for the newborn stage. According to kidshealth.org tummy time is important during the newborn stage to develop neck control that will strengthen muscle for future milestones such as rolling over and crawling. One last important thing to consider is safe non-toxic baby toys, try looking for BPA-free or non-toxic labels.

Here are a few of our favourite toys that we used for our little on in 2025.

1 – Bright Starts Oballhttps://amzn.to/46a50tW

The Oball was one of our absolute favourites! This toy is so easy to grasp and super lightweight. The smooth mesh design allows the baby to grip the oball from any angle as they begin working on early motor skills. This was one of our daughters first toys and she is still playing with it now at 8 months old.

The high contrast patterns stimulate the baby’s senses as they learn to move their arms and legs. The materials are soft to the touch and safe to explore with their mouth. This set makes the perfect gift for any newborn to 12 months old.

4 – Fisher-Price Baby Sound Machine – Soothe & Settle Bunnyhttps://amzn.to/4aR6Wds

This portable sound machine or the sleep bunny as we call it in our house, is absolutely adorable. The bunny is super soft and it gently moves its head along with the sound or song. This cuddly bunny helps calm our baby every time. You can choose from several soothing options including nature sounds, soft music, white noise or yawns & snores.

5 – Hello, Bedtime: A High-Contrast Bookhttps://amzn.to/4rKOAjO

You can’t go wrong with a high-contrast book for a baby! The fun illustrations and bold black and white patterns will be sure to catch the attention of your little one.
